Croft Wool is located on the road to Shieldaig about 9 miles from Applecross, just past Cuaig, and definitely worth a visit. It is run by Thomas and Leslie Kilbride who have a long and vast experience with spinning, dyeing and weaving. Thomas and Leslie live and work on their croft at Ri-Aulaidh with their special flock of Gotland sheep which provide the raw wool for their handmade products, knitwear and weaving.
The quality of the wool is down to the terrain that the sheep are living on which is sparse and rocky, with heather covering both the hillside and seashore, the main part of their diet being seaweed.
Once a year, during the summer the sheep are gathered from the hills and brought back to be sheared on the croft. The wool is then spun and dyed or left natural to produce a fantastic selection of original, handmade items for their craft shop. The wool is a natural grey Arran knitting wool which is made into hand knitted jumpers and hats, also handwoven scarves, rugs and cloth are for sale. Also for sale is a selection of knitwear and weaving produced by other hand spinners and weavers in the local area.
If you are interested in learning more about the technique of hand spinning or hand dyeing Thomas and Leslie run courses throughout the year on many traditional crafts and would be happy to hear from you.

This picturesque little building located where the Bealach Road reaches sea level is now an attractive gift shop selling jewellery and a particularly attractive range of gifts. Previously this building really was a coal shed wher the local supply of coal, brought to the neraby pier by puffer, was stored.
The jewellery is made locally by Sue Groocock and are many of the craft items are also made locally.
